Acne can be stubborn and hard to get rid of. If you have acne-prone skin, it is most likely that you are still finding the right product to help you get rid of acne forever. With a vast assortment of anti-acne products to choose from, it can be overwhelming… how do you know which one is the best for you?

Here are four ingredients you need to take note of before buying a new anti-acne skincare product. These can help you banish existing spots and prevent future ones.

1. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) that acts as an exfoliant. It removes the top layer of dead skin cells. It can do this by penetrating the pores and unclogging them. Using a product with salicylic acid as one of its active ingredients can help reduce blackheads and excess oil, thereby preventing new pimples.

2. AHAs or Alpha Hydroxy Acids

There are two types of AHA: Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid. The former is derived from milk while the latter is derived from sugar. Both work the same way, so if you see one of these ingredients and not the other, the product will still work.

AHA are chemical exfoliants that break dead skin cells. Don’t be afraid of the word chemical; AHAs are gentle and non-irritant. They prevent bacterial overgrowth, removing dead skin cells and sebum oil.

3. Tea Tree Oil

Due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree oil help reduces existing breakouts and soothe inflamed acne spots. It can also trigger white-blood cells that will speed up the healing process of the skin.

Many think that tea tree oil can be applied directly to the skin. That’s not true. It can cause rashes.  You should find a cleanser or a gel that has tea tree oil as an active ingredient instead of using it as it is.

4. Retinol

Although retinol is most commonly used as an anti-aging ingredient, it can also treat acne. Retinol can increase skin-cell turnover by getting rid of the top layer of dead skin cells and promoting the growth of new collagen. It is great for reducing the size of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples, and it improves the overall texture and tone of your skin.

What is your go-to ingredient when buying skincare products? Always remember to be patient when using a new product; treating acne takes time and patience.
